There are many alternatives to using standard, public school textbooks. Besides using your memory alone, using the public library, as not only a wonderful field trip for your child, but as a powerful resource for learning, your child will have a wealth of information readily available all in one place. Reading through old magazines and newspapers teaches your child about the world around them, not only current events but past history as well. There are also many organizations, this could include the scouts, camps, local museums, etc. that are more then willing to share information to help you with your child's education.

Home School Makes a Comeback

All through history, the way home school education has been taught has been quite effective. But, with advancements in technology and the yearning to learn has increased in the home school student, modifications have been made to provide a more stimulating curriculum, encouraging our children to reach for the stars.

Doing a search on the internet for home schooling, you will notice how improvements have been made in how we teach our children. With these advancements come new methods of teaching, more hands-on education, unlike the simpler way home school education got its start.

Keeping your child or children excited about learning can sometimes be difficult. Holding their attention to sit and listen to a lesson can sometimes be challenge because not all children have the same attention span. Try to keep your child anxious to learn by planning activities outside of the home environment. Take that trip to the library, or museum, or even the zoo for a science education. There are so many things available, give them a try.

Try changing up your child's home school experience. Be sure to add activities and exercises that will stimulate your child. Don't rely strictly on conventional methods to home school your child, bring fresh, new ideas to your home school studies. Keep your child excited about education!

OK - NO "Break Room" for Home School Parents

Okay, so I realize that home school parents do not really have a "break room", so I use this term loosely. "Break room" in my mind is any time you have a few free minutes, like when you're watching your child or children do independent study work. This is your time, your "break room". Have that extra cup of coffee or tea and blog us about what you have found that works for your child during his or her home school experience. You dedicate your life to giving your child a quality education so why not share that wealth of information you have stored in your mind. If there's something that works particularly well, please share it with us and of course if there's something that, well you know, doesn't work no matter what you do, share that too. This "break room" is your opportunity for "me" time and we look forward to hearing from you. it a try, what do you have to lose.

Let the Learning Continue

Even during the summer you can keep your child in the learning mode. There are so many things to do outside, why not make this a summer science class. Collect specimens of leaves, plants, insects, etc. for further study during the winter months. Look how much fun it would be to look at these summer treasures under a microscope . Being able to see the fine hairs on a bee's leg could open up a new world of exploration for your child. Give it a try, what do you have to lose.

Strike Up The Band

Get ready for the 4th of July festivities but helping your little ones make musical instruments to follow along with the parade. Take an empty cardboard tube (paper towel tube for older children and toilet tissue tube for the tiny tots), cover one end with a small piece of paper and seal end securely with heavy tape. Next fill your tube about 1/4 to 1/3 full with dry beans. Seal up the open end with another piece of paper and the heavy tape. Now wrap your tube with some colorful paper and decorations of your child's choosing and let the fun begin! This craft will only take 1/2 hour to make but will give your child a full day of enjoyment. So, STRIKE UP THE BAND, the parade is starting.

New Month, New Plan

Today, being July 1st, starts a new plan for summer activities. Time to get the children outside running around playing, away from video games and TV. Think back when your parents talked about games they used to play during the summer, such as ball tag, hide and seek, kick the can, etc. These games can be just as much fun today as they were then. Sure, your kids will think you've lost your mind, but get them involved in an outdoor game and before you know it they won't want to stop. Healthy exercise means a healthy mind. So in preparation for your Home School start-up in the fall, play a game of kick the can, you just might have a blast!

Summertime
